Chief Innovation Officer and Executive Director

JOB SUMMARY:

UCI Beall Applied Innovation brings campus-based inventions and entrepreneurship together with Orange County's vibrant business community to support job creation and economic growth. To make this happen, UCI Beall Applied Innovation facilitates connections between UCI and industry, including: entrepreneurs seeking access to university inventions and talent, large corporations looking to tap the school's research capabilities, and investors wanting to financially support promising new companies. Additionally, UCI Beall Applied Innovation is working to cultivate an "innovation district" in the heart of Orange County, producing more start-ups, more scale-ups, and, ultimately, a world-class entrepreneurial ecosystem. Under UCI Beall Applied Innovation, the Research Translation Group (RTG) fosters the evolution of UCI's fundamental research into products with real-world impact is the primary focus of the Research Translation Group (RTG). RTG provides a complete suite of capabilities, including processing invention disclosures, patenting innovation, and connecting industry partners with relevant opportunities. The Invention Transfer Group (ITG) is a significant component of RTG, tasked with helping university faculty, physicians and researchers understand and navigate the translation of their discoveries.

The Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) provides executive level leadership for the UCI Beall Applied Innovation (BAI) organization established by UCI as a campus-wide resource reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor. The position is broad based, having responsibilities in several areas critical to the future success of the campus. The core areas of responsibility are campus entrepreneurial community/corporate engagement, intellectual property stewardship, and outreach/external relations connected to entrepreneurship an industry collaboration. Operational responsibilities of the CIO include oversight of a wide range of services provided by the BAI Research Translation Group, including invention disclosures, provisional patents, patent prosecution, negotiating and licensing of UCI intellectual property, and corporate collaboration. The CIO oversees the negotiation and coordination of Industry Sponsored Research grants and contracts. Applied Innovation coordinates and facilitates campus initiatives such as campus wide entrepreneurial activities, business incubators, corporate support groups, Innovation Advisors (IA) program and economic development.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

At least ten years of executive level experience in one or more of the following, business development, commercialization of technology, patent prosecution, IP licensing, marketing inventions, or related executive level responsibilities in a research university or research institution.

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Advanced knowledge of academic entrepreneurism models, University research initiatives and market demands. Proven ability to translate theory into practice.

Extensive business knowledge with comprehensive understanding of the University research function. Demonstrated knowledge and enthusiasm for science and technology, and ability to develop intellectual property origination in all academic fields of the university.

Strong working knowledge of intellectual property protection methods, licensing practices, contract law, as well as government laws relating to technology transfer within industry and academia. Ability to apply expertise in commercialization, licensing and current industry research to develop strategic innovative, research initiatives.

Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain an extensive network of professional contacts. Proven strong political acumen skills and ability to influence and navigate relations in a diverse, complex organization.

Advanced leadership skills and abilities in strategy development, systems planning and change management. Proven leadership abilities to oversee multiple functions or departments through subordinate managers. Experience in creating strategic and operational plans for an organization of similar size.

Skills to design and implement organizational strategies. Demonstrated superior skill to provide and assist leadership in addressing complex and sensitive problems and matters.

Expert skills to build relationships and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques. Negotiation skills and strategic thinking requisite for sustained, high-level interactions with government agencies, industry and other private sector sponsors.

Exceptional critical thinker. Ability to identify problems before they arise. Ability to solve complex, wide-reaching problems when no precedent exists.

Excels at communicating and addressing sensitive issues, tailoring communication style based on the situation and individual. Effective listener and advisor. Ability to persuade and get buy in from others in critical situations.

Ability to apply concepts of out-licensing, business development, corporate partnering, new venture formation to achieve University research goals.

Leadership ability to direct and provide vision for an inclusive and diverse group of professionals working independently in a wide variety of projects and areas of responsibility related to innovation and entrepreneurship in a university setting.

Interpersonal skills to develop relationships and partner with university faculty and administrative leaders, and the ability to effectively represent the university interests to corporate leaders.

Strong verbal, written and presentation skills before audiences with varied backgrounds.

Experience in making risk-based investment decisions in speculative technologies.

PREFERRED:

Master's degree in related area preferred.

Demonstrated experience in technology startup creation, funding, and exit.

Extensive network of Venture Capital contacts including VC angel groups and individual investors. Experience in raising venture capital funds.
